SCOPE OF RESPONSIBILITIES: - To assist the principal in providing educational leadership in relation to the coordinating and implementing of policies and procedures of the School Board, directives of the Superintendent, Regional Superintendent. and those of the Division Heads
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: - Supervises the instructional program.
- Prepares the instructional materials budget and textbook requisition.
- Supervises and evaluates the teachers, discipline coordinators, counselors, and other staff as designated by the principal.
- Supervises, collects, and reviews teacher lesson plans.
- Is responsible for scheduling and leveling of students.
- Assists in the supervision of the Guidance Program.
- Confers with teachers, students, and parents.
- Supervises extra-curricular activities.
- Assists in orientation of teachers.
- Organizes and supervises duty schedules.
- Schedules and supervises substitute personnel.
- Tours school plant periodically during the day, making subsequent recommendations to the principal.
- Supervises the transportation of students.
- Supervises student attendance and discipline.
- Works with all central office supportive personnel.
- Supervises the maintenance of personnel and students' records.
- Supervises all data processing functions.
- Evaluates the school's standard test scores and other test data to determine the areas of strengths and weaknesses.
- Attends department head meetings at the school and parish level when possible.
- Functions in the role of principal in the absence of the principal.
- Performs all other duties as assigned by the principal.
WORK ENVIRONMENT/HOURS WORKED: - A certified administrator serving in the capacity of assistant principal is required to work in an office-type setting, climate controlled environment adhering to School Board energy policy and in the outside areas which are subject to climate extremes.
- Work day consists of eight hours per day including one hour for lunch. Also, he/he must sometimes work evenings, weekends, and holidays as required by job responsibilities and supervisors.
- Attend meetings in various locations.
COMMUNICATION SKILLS: - A certified administrator serving in the capacity of assistant principal must be able to communicate in standard English both orally and in writing.
- Communication must be commensurate with age and skill of listener.
- Must have ability to accurately give and receive information via tele-communication system.
- Must be able to communicate successfully and pleasantly with the public.
- Must be able to accurately compile and access data, summarize information, and provide written report to supervisor.
- Must have ability to represent school system at various public functions.
EQUIPMENT USED: - Typewriter, micro computer, facsimile machine, calculator, copy machine, printers, folding machine, intercom, public address system, security alarm system and other appropriate office machines.
PHYSICAL INVOLVEMENT: - Sitting, standing, walking, running, observing and monitoring student behavior in all facets of the school environment is required during the work day.
- Must be able to operate office equipment.
- Reaching, bending, lifting 10 pounds is sometimes required as well as the physical restraint of another person or persons.
- Ability to provide own transportation to school, work location, and meeting sites.
- Mobility skills necessary to access a variety of work locations.
MENTAL INVOLVEMENT: - Must understand and interpret written and verbal instructions from supervisor and must be cognizant of policy and procedures governing discipline and student services in the Jefferson Parish Public School System and their implementation.
HUMAN RELATIONS INVOLVEMENT: - Must be able to work compatibly in group settings.
- Must serve as a resource to administrators, faculty, staff, students, parents and community.
- Must be able to respond positively to supervision and to accept suggestions to improvement.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: - Master's Degree or higher with Louisiana Certification in Administration and Supervision on level of assignment (Principalship Certificate).
- Three (3) years of successful teaching experience.
- Teaching experience at level assigned.
- Demonstrated ability to work with various groups.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS: - Doctorate Degree
- Evidence of preparation for high school/middle/junior school program administration.
- Successful school administrative experience.
